The Truth Behind The Lies: Nick Zanca aka Mister Lies

Nick Zanca aka Mister Lies courtesy of official Facebook page.
Note: I originally wrote this in October last year for my journalism class and put it up on my portfolio blog. An abridged version of the interview I conducted for this article also appeared on Brooklyn Vegan Chicago. In celebration of Mister Lies' debut LP "Mowgli" finally being released yesterday I've decided to repost it here.

October updates

After being a contributing writer for DePaul's school paper The DePaulia for a few months I've been given an editing job at the paper. I'll be in charge of the Weekend Edition of the website which will feature short articles that focus on Chicago trends, restaurants, music shows, and so on. I appreciate the opportunity immensely and look forward to working with some great editors at the paper.

I've also been contributing some stuff to Brooklyn Vegan Chicago, probably one of the best music blogs in Chicago. You can find an interview I did for them on the site as well as my coverage of Alt-J when they played at the Empty Bottle. I managed to get some nice pictures.

I also covered the third day of Riot Fest for the DePaulia back in September. Pictures of that, as well as all my other DePaulia articles can be found here.

So if you aren't seeing a lot of updates on my blog it's probably because I have my hands full writing for the DePaulia and Brooklyn Vegan full time. Keep your eyes peeled on those sites for more of my stuff.

I also made a little Halloween themed Youtube mix for the DePaulia which I've imbedded below. Enjoy!

best,
Milos

Disappears @The Empty Bottle 08/20/2012

Note: This show review was originally supposed to appear on Brooklyn Vegan Chicago back in August, but my editor never got my email for some reason, so I'll be putting it here. Better late than never.

Chicago’s Disappears headlined an after party show at the Empty Bottle Friday night following their performance at the Milwaukee Avenue Arts Festival. The band was supported by fellow Chicagoans Radar Eyes and Population.

Sir Calloway: Rapper, Comedian, Con Artist

I went to Wicker Park the other day to get a book from Miopic. Instead of heading home right away I decided to take a short walk around the neighborhood. It had rained earlier in the day and the weather had finally cooled. Looking to see that there weren't any Green Peace clipboard stalkers on my side of the street I began my walk.

After only five minutes of walking down Milwaukee I was approached by a guy who asked me if I was a hip-hop fan. Caught off guard by the random question, and not seeing a clipboard in his hand, I made the mistake of stopping and answering.

Updates Updates and More Updates

Apologies for not keeping the site updated the past month and a half everyone. I was busy with finals and other projects that took up much of my time. Currently I'm overseas visiting family. I've listed below some significant events that have happened since my last update.

Most recently I contributed a short article for Brooklyn Vegan Chicago on the Xiu Xiu show at Lincoln Hall. A good chunk of what I sent them ended up being edited, most likely because I wrote too much. Still, I'm glad to finally have something published on a legit Chicago music blog. For those interested you can read it here. I'll be doing an internship with them over summer so there's more contributions to come.

I also did an article for one of my Journalism classes on the recently opened Laugh Factory in Lakeview. I had the honor of interviewing the owner, Jamie Masada, who happened to be in Chicago around the time I called requesting an interview (talk about good timing). Unfortunately my recorder decided to crap out on me so I didn't have the interview recorded. I beat myself up for a few days after that. Regardless the article turned out pretty good. You can read it over at The Redline Project here. It also features a slideshow of some pictures I took of the comedians at that night's show.

I also saw The Black Belles play at the Empty Bottle and Balam Acab at Lincoln Hall. I got to talk to both after their shows. Learned some interesting things which I'll mention in an upcoming post (hopefully at the end of the week).

I also recently signed up as a volunteer at Chirp Radio. If you haven't heard of them (which would surprise me since they seem to set up a table at almost every show I go to) they're a great independent radio station in Chicago. Right now they're online only but they're planning on getting an FM license sometime next year. If everything goes well, I might be one of their new DJs in the summer. I'll keep you posted. Meanwhile, check them out at their website, they play some great stuff.

Lastly I've been thinking of starting a record label with some buddies. Still in the planning stages but it's looking highly possible. Again, I'll keep you posted. Hope you're all having a great summer, whether you're in Chicago or elsewhere. Stay cool out there!
